Ben and Lex Biography
From opening the main stage at the Glade festival to their fortnightly Breakspoll nominated Nuskool Breaks radio show and running their own record label, Ben and Lex could be the busiest boys in breaks.
Since pairing up at the end of the last century, the Westcountry DJ duo have rocked dance floors all over the world - from their residency at Beatz and Bobz, the longest-running breaks night in the UK, to performances at the Miami Winter Music
Conference, Breakspoll, Mission Dance Winter Sessions in Mannheim and the Break Nation festival in Seville where they showed a crowd of over 10,000 Spanish nutters how to party Ben and Lex style.
They have played alongside breaks heavyweights such as Rennie Pilgrem, Freq Nasty, Tayo, James Lavelle (Unkle) and The Freestylers as well as giants such as the Wu Tang Clan, Afrika Bambaata, Adam F and Fresh, Grandmaster Flash and DJ Zinc.
That’s not to mention numerous sets at festivals including Glastonbury, The Glade, Beautiful Days and the National Adventure Sports Festival.
Not content with the excitement of playing live, the duo began writing and recording their own material in 2003. Their debut single, Costa Nostra (Functional) received universal DJ and radio support around the world. That was swiftly followed by Proper Tasty/Reconsidered which firmly stamped its mark on the breaks scene with radio play on Radio One, Ministry of Sound FM, Breaks FM and others, as well as support from the likes of Freq Nasty, Krafty Kuts, Skool of Thought, Tayo and Steelzawheelz to name but a few.
As well as continuing to release on Functional Breaks - their tune Soundgal, as featured on Freq Nasty’s Breakspoll 2006 compilation, is released as Functional #44 - the boys have been approached by labels such as Polar Red, Fly Beat Music, Future Perfect and Plasma.digital for remix and original work.
Their distinctive sound can be heard on their Nuskool Breaks radio show, which has been nominated for Best Radio Show twice at Breakspoll (watch out Annie Nightingale), as well as shows on SWU Radio and Brap.fm.
Their latest project is their own label, Ape Records, with forthcoming releases and remixes from Benjamin Vial, Afghan Headspin, 2 Bit Thugs and of course Ben and Lex themselves.
With a whole host of festival appearence and releases on the cards for this year these two Westcountry Warriors look like they will be impossible to escape, so go see them and treat yourself to a damn good party!
