Boxed in: Mr Snook answers the questions (fresh new mix action inside!)

There aren't too many labels around right now whose every new offering is guaranteed to get us hitting that download button and listening as quick as we can, as soon as the email hits our inbox here at thisisbreaks.com towers. Broken Robot, however, have been consistently excellent since launching earlier this year, and their latest release from Southampton-based newcomer Mr Snook is right up to the standard set by the likes of Neurodriver and Hedflux on earlier efforts. We're lucky enough to have an exclusive new minimix from the boy showcasing his rough but techy style to celebrate the Message From Dread EP hitting download stores today, so have a gander, then go out and buy it from Beatport, 'cos this is one you definitely want in the arsenal.

Where are you now and what are you doing?

Living in Southampton working for the health service, making music and DJing in my free time.

What was the best gig you played in the last six months?

I guess I’d have to say Glade festival, it was the first time playing at a large festival and the whole experience was amazing.

What's the most embarrassing thing you've ever done in a DJ booth?

Well, two very embarrassing things happened both in the same night when I was playing back to back with my mate James Wesley. The first was attempting to plug a UV lamp into a multi socket adapter. The adapter was faulty and when I plugged it in the whole thing cut out ... no music! The second: The decks were badly positioned for CDJs. James had just done an awesome mix, really had the whole thing rolling then I went to take my go and stopped the wrong deck! Arrrrrrhh! We swapped the order of the decks right then and there.

What are the top three tracks in your record box right now?

In no order..

Farace – Nice and Close

Noisia – Seven stitches

Sonic Bee – New Skool Skank – Farace remix

Complete the sentence: "Women respond to ..."

Groovy funky beats n bass!!!

What tune would you never play, no matter how desperate?

Any tune with bad lyrics in it, i.e. lyrics about hatred

If you could warm up for any DJ in the world, who would it be, and why?

The question should be - ‘Who would you have warm up for you?’ (though I guess it might be rude to insinuate that someone is a warm up DJ!). The person on before you can really change how the crowd accept your music. For me to warm up I guess it’d have to be someone playing similar to me, or someone playing tearout breaks or psy trance, someone on my level, maybe Mr Mirra, I like his style. It’s a bit more uptempo than me so I guess it’d work well.

The crowd is flagging and you need an emergency tune to stop them all going to the bar. What would it be?

Sonic Bee – New Skool Skank – Farace remix, as mentioned above, it fits in nicely and has a wicked positive reggae vibe about it, guaranteed to bring em back.

Vinyl or CD decks?

CD now but started on vinyl years back

Stone cold sober or elegantly wasted?

Elegantly wasted when possible! Always the best way, though very easy to go beyond the state of elegance.

Plump DJs or Stanton Warriors?

Plump DJs. One of the best breaks nights I went to was due to these guys!

What would you have been doing now if you had not been answering thisisbreaks.com's questions?

I’m in the process of swapping everything from my old computer onto a new one, so it’d be lots of transferring files etc.

Where do you see yourself in six months time?

Having had some more stuff released and DJing out a bit more, being a recognised name in the breaks/dance scene.
