One of the frustrating things about being involved in the breakbeat scene right now is the way that so much great music is being missed by the wider public due to the misguided viewpoint that the golden days of breaks have gone, and only the artists that were at the forefront of things in those times are capable of really kicking it. This blog is dedicated to letting you know about the best new acts out there, and each Friday from now on, we'll be featuring a different blog from one of the five artists which we believe are ready to bust through into the big time. We're calling the whole thing Future Five, and we'll also be giving over the site music player to music from these acts.
After a vote at thisisbreaks.com, we've decided that the following artists deserve our attention over the next 12 months, and we'll be campaigning hard for these guys when it comes to the upcoming Breakspoll awards. And so, with no further ado, thisisbreaks.com's Future Five for 2009-2010 are:
First up, we have the debut post from BSD, some forthcoming tracks from whom you can check out in the music player right now.
Hi people from thisisbreaks … let's take a break from our “Malditos Bass-Star-Dos” album work to kick off this first edition of Future Five.
In this first blog we’ll explain where we come from and how we see ourselves in the breaks scene. BSD is a project which focuses on the breakbeat music produced between ’98 and ’03. These were the golden years for breaks, we think, and this music, even though it had plenty of influences from other genres, had a clear and distinctive sound which was recognised by everybody and created a strong identity. We’ve approached our first bunch of productions with this musical view in mind, and it will be even more evident on our first album.
We’re party lovers and we think a good vibe is the key for a genre and nights to succeed, so we try to implement this philosophy in our music as much as we can. The proof is when we play, and see people having the time of their lives (as you can see in our video above from the recent iBreaks Festival in Spain).
We’re also big lovers of remixing and we’ve enjoyed making a few remixes so far, such as the ones we put together for two Beatport Competitions (reworking Depeche Mode and Black Eyed Peas). We really miss this kind of positive and euphoric breakbeat music and we strongly think more of this stuff is what we need to get the scene where it was back in 2002 or even stronger than then.
I guess our mentality is not just doing tracks for our four mates from the block, but to try to produce tracks for a market as wide as possible, while always being totally loyal to the breakbeat sound. The future success of breakbeat is actually in everybody’s hands: it's a matter, we think, of activating a "lost sound" in the music, and with a few people pushing in the same direction, we’re confident things can only get better.
With BSD we’re already on this path, so hopefully we’ll see more and more music like this being released as the market becomes wider and locks into the breakbeat sound.
We’ll keep up our hard work with new productions which you’ll be able to follow on iBreaks Records, and also we’ll keep you updated on this blog with all our latest developments and news. Thanks to thisisbreaks.com for this wikkid new space on the website, and don't forget to check out the music player on the site's front page for two of our new tracks. Enjoy!
