On this site,
we've already gone on record to say that Future Funk Squad's new album Disorders of Skill is probably the most exciting breaks album to hit the scene in many years, quite possibly all time. This is a producer absolutely at the top of his game, offering uncompromising, blistering breakbeats that quite simply blow everything else around right now out of the water. So we're incredibly proud to be running an exclusive week of album preview posts in the run up to the official release of the album on July 3. We'll be posting a couple of tracks a day between now and then, so keep checking back each morning for your next instalment. Each comes complete with commentary from Mr FFS himself, Glen Nichols.
Track one: Zones
Glen writes: I thought the opener should be a bit of an all out breakbeat banger and Zones just made sense to start the album with, it kinda goes back to my early nuskool roots which I really like. Its kinda simple and not too much going on but enough to get set the tone for the album. When I started this album I really wanted to get back into sampling again as the label I was previously signed too really didn't let me do any! This contains a couple of 80s samples, as well as my well loved Casio CZ-3000 synth and also a vocal from a DJ cutz 12".
Track two: Street Knowledge
Glen writes: I bet you can't guess where the intro sample comes from? I have always been a fan of NWA and loved that opening from Dr Dre. I see this track as a bit of a dark moody roller, it was definitely something I made when I wasn't in the best mood! Haha! it kinda builds and builds with extra layers, I also really enjoyed visiting some old skool breaks for this record and felt that the break that was also used on PMT's Gyromancer worked pretty well (although at the time I didn't realise it was the same break as I got it from some old breaks and beats record).
Don't forget to check back for more tomorrow. And if you preorder the Disorders Of Skill now, you will also be sent a link to download a zip file containing 11 previous Future Funk Squad mashups, bootlegs and special unreleased re-edits.
