Plump DJs are legends on the breaks scene, so let's hope their new label, Grand Hotel Records, delivers more of the same. It's a little sad that they're no longer at Finger Lickin', the label which they've been a part of for more than a decade, but we guess they have their reasons.

To celebrate the launch of Grand Hotel, the boys are giving away a free slab of techy electro-funk, Be Good, which to us sounds a lot like NAPT's recent output. Click here to register and download your free copy.

Recent Plumps DJ sets have left us a little disappointed, as they seemed to consist of one or two of their own tunes alongside a whole raft of electro house or fidget tracks - a format which wouldn't be so bad if these actually mixed well with the duo's original numbers. Be Good at least sounds a lot more like the kind of tracks they've been playing recently, although it still (just about) fits the breaks format. Let us know your thoughts - is this an exciting new direction for the Plumps to be taking? Or do you miss the bonafide breakbeat style of classics like Get Kinky and The Push?

It seems to me that the Plumps are just trying to stay cool, hanging around with the new [fidget] ‘in crowd’. But I cannot bully them for too long because I am completely missing the old Plump Djs. In my rather biased opinion no producer has created a style and sound quite as raw and fresh as the old plumps. Thankfully we can still browse through their back catalogue and find some of their earlier work which will still fit into any Breakbeat set today. Anyone who has been keeping their ear on the ground with the Plumps knows that this new ‘style’ has been a slow, gentle transition and we shouldn’t lay blame solely on the Plumps. There are others, for example, Finger Lickin’ whom won best label at Breakspoll earlier this year, but still seem to enjoy ‘blurring the boundaries’ (For more on why it might be necessary for labels and producers to do this, you might find a recent article in the Guardian newspaper about Waterstones Bookshop enlightening).
