Dom Almond has always put out full-on tearout style beasts of tracks, and his new release on Hardcore Beats Pure Filth drops this week We took a few moments of his time to find out what's going on in the mind of a man still pushing the tougher edge of the scene.
How are you and what are you up to right now?
I’m fine thanks, just uploading some clips to MySpace for my forthcoming EP on Hardcore Beats Pure Filth.
Tell us a bit about your remix of 'Wanting'.
Well, the original A Dominant Species version is an uplifting vocal DnB track with a dirty undertone. I wanted to bring the filth to the forefront, yet keep some uplifting sections. My remixes for STFU records have been along that line, so I wanted to keep to that style. I’m sure you’re aware that I like my grimy synthesis and rolling vibes. I think the remix turned out pretty heavy but still has a feel good factor.
A DOMINANT SPECIES - WANTING - DOM A by ST FU Records
You've always leaned towards the heavier side of breakbeat - do you have a lot of aggression to get out?
Good question! Yeah, I suppose I do. I’ve always been pretty bad tempered and I do get irate over stuff sometimes. I have learnt to control it over the years, so don’t worry, I won’t go punching people in the face ... unless they push me too far! I’d like to think nowadays I’m a lover not a fighter.
Your releases are predominantly breaks, but you've also produced a range of other styles. What is it that keeps you coming back to the broken beat?
The FUNK! Breakbeat gives a good groove and has a more percussive feel. Don’t get me wrong, I do like other grooves, but breakbeat just appeals more to my love of old skool, hip hop, metal etc. You can get all those vibes going on in a breaks track and I love it.
Where do you get your inspiration from when you're sitting down to put a track together?
I’m going to get deep now. My soul! I’m a big believer of listening to what you feel from the music when you create it. If I make a musical line and I don’t get a reaction myself then I won’t use it. If I make a drum groove that doesn’t get my head nodding or my foot tapping then I won’t use it. Listen to your soul man! I think part of your soul is imprinted into the music and people pick up on that on a subconscious level ... Told you dude, deep!
DOM ALMOND - RINSE IT OUT LIVE - CLIP by Dom Almond
You've had some great releases going back to 2006, so you've seen a lot of trends come along in the scene. What do you make of the breaks scene these days?
I think the scene is still healthy. It may not be as popular as other genres, but people still love a breakbeat. Some producers are still pushing boundaries and being experimental and that’s what music should be about. I don’t have any particular likes or dislikes in the scene, it’s all good.
What acts are doing it for you right now?
Man Like Me. so many cool musical styles in the music and a really nice feel good factor. Their music is fun to listen to.
What's coming up for you this year in terms of releases? What can we expect from your own work, and do you have any other interesting remix projects coming up?
I have my EP out on Pure Filth records this week and my breakbeat remix of A Dominant Species' Wanting out soon. I have no other remix projects at the moment so just concentrating on new material, watch this space!
