Bassrock Records have been one of the main players on the bassy end of breakbeat for more than half a decade, and it's with great sadness that thisisbreaks.com hears they're taking an indefinite holiday. Luckily label mainstay Backdraft (above) have thrown down an epic retrospective mix to remind you of all the best Bassrock moments. Meanwhile, label boss Paul Bassrock answers the questions for our regular Label This! series

What’s it all about then?

Bassrock is a UK (south west) based breaks label with heavy old skool jungle influences and filthy big basslines! We started off in 2004 and have featured artists and remixers including Tayo, Sonz of Mecha, Control Z & Screwface, 30HZ, Baobinga, Backdraft, Autobots, Bill Vega & New Decade, Jinx, Afghan Headspin (this is where the list goes on ... and on).

Who's involved?

As De La Soul said "Me , Myself & I" (Paul Bassrock). Artwork is produced by a friend of mine, Propulsion, who I need to give massive thanks to for all the last-minute changes that we always go through.

If your label was a football team, which would it be?

One of the shit ones.

Who's the artist on the label who gives you hope that you might one day pay off that mortgage?

Everyone who has ever been involved. Special mention to Backdraft though; they have been a massive help from the start and they're a really, really nice couple.

On a scale of one to 10, how "breaks" are you?

9/10 (nobody's perfect)

If you could be one other breaks label, who would it be and why?

CDR, everyone seems to play their tracks ...

What are your plans for the future?

We're actually taking a bit of a break now hence the mix showcasing the last five years. So, as of now, no plans whatsoever. Rebel Bass IV's Slim Blue is the last 12" and release for the forseeable future. But ... never say never!

If you were not doing breaks, what style would you take on?

Dubstep, without a doubt.

What's your biggest pet hate, music-wise?

Snobbery, pigeonholers and the people who hate on other styles. I think if you're a lover of music, you should be able to respect anything that someone has put part of their self into making.
