Each week, we pick out all the best new releases so you don't have to, and also warn you which ones to avoid like a breaks bootleg of Britney Spears. Your hosts: Shakes, Sometimes Sean, Missmax and Ben Jurassik
Back in the day, it was Brits such as PMT and Hybrid who ruled the roost when it came to progressive breaks. These days it's the eastern Europeans who are at the forefront, with Romania's Mesmer (pictured, above) one of the leading lights of the scene. Here he teams up with the UK's Beta, considered the producer's producer and no shabby move on the nobs and dials himself. Tetris is all lush pads and gorgeous arpeggios, underpinned with brooding bass and a searing breakbeat. On remix duties, Hungary's Retroid toughens up the drums and throws in a fearsome live break for good measure, while Sweden's Jariten sends down a percussive, wobble-heavy reworking that will suit more intelligent dancefloors. A stunning package for fans of head music. (BJ - editor@thisisbreaks.com)
Deadmau5
Strobe (Plump DJs remix)
(Mau5trap)
8
No matter what style of music you're into, you can't have avoided the name Deadmau5 this year. The hard working Canadian has gone from being the new big thing in prog-house to a chart topping worldwide superstar. He ends the year with a return to progressive euphoria and top breakers Plump DJs have been enrolled on the remix roster. The beautiful spacious synths of the original make for a heart-warming melodic breakdown juxtaposed against some gritty straight up bass grunt. Drum machine beats give an old skool breakbeat/electro feel as zaps and synth elements add flavour to the grungy monotone bass line. (S - stewee_g@yahoo.com)
Left/Right and Digital Pizza
Gangbang
Sound of Habib
Left/Right & Digital Pizza "Gang bang" (Jariten remix) by Johan Soh
Following on from their well spun remix of Jurassik's Operator on Sound of Habib, Texan producers Left/Right team up with newcomers Digital Pizza for their next release. Striding in with a loping break and tonally matched vocal samples, Gangbang comes grooving atcha with heavy bass whomps, morphing synths and spicy percussion cooked up to perfection with a hint of syncopated sauce. Rising to remix duties is Swedish producer and label head honcho, Jariten (Johan Soh). Setting the standard high with a rolling break, vibrant synths and tough bass, this is a more moody take on the original that builds tension and offers sensual melodies. Gang Bang? I'm in. Mobius
Flood Warning (Original/That Girl DJ remix)
Ape Records
7
Ape Records start the year on a dark and edgy backroom rave tip with Southampton duo, Mobius. Flood Warning makes no bones about getting nasty as it swaggers along into the first drop. The beats have an interesting “live rock meets electro”, the reese bass carries plenty of energy, and lazer blasts, screams and dashes of twisted noise also drop in and out of the fold. On the flip, That Girl DJ reworks the original into a chemical infested 4/4 breaks hybrid track punctuated with funky stabs for some failsafe mainroom action. (SS - sean_u2k@yahoo.com)
