BSD :: MALDITOS BASS-STAR-DOS (ALBUM SAMPLER PART 1) :: IBREAKS by iBreaks

Curiouser and curiouser. BSD claim to be French, but their full name (Bass-Star-Dos) sounds suspiciously Spanish. Conspiracy theories abound as to the identity of the masked duo, but all you need to know is that they deliver time and time again when it comes to explosive, classy breakbeat. Hypnotising is a chunky vocal-led number that sounds like the bastard child of Daft Punk and Candi Staton, while Total Cucumber is the sort of rolling, ravey, groove-led 4am monster that Leftfield used to turn out. Both are instant classics. (Jurassik - editor@thisisbreaks.com)

HIGRADE017 Quadrat Beat - Under Control w/ Equalizers & Kiwa Re... by Bombtraxx

Brothers Eugene and Sergey have been bashing out breakbeat stormers since 2008 and have joined up for the first time with US label High Grade Recordings which has been on-fire recently. Under Control is a familiar stuttering bass note and big kick & snare battering you into submission while the vocal announcement sample gives it some life and amusement. The flip sees the Equalizers bring their spacious new rising synth sounds toegether with a tech-funk style 4/4 beat and a heavily swinging hat pattern while Kiwa remixes it into a more up for it roller utilising the original's trancey breakdown perfectly. Jurassik - How to Pick Up Chicks + New VIP Mix by Supatronix

It looks like an exciting year ahead for London’s Supatronix Records, who have managed to garner a lot of support this year already. With this prosperity, label boss Jurassik has given his classic track, How to Pick up Chicks, a tip top VIP makeover. Although I’ve got to say I enjoyed the simmering b-line and darkly vibes of the original more, the VIP mix does have an upfront attitude that’ll give the crowd somethin’ extra to git down to and the lush melodies will still make women weak at the knees. JoeBot’s carnival-style rework and Plaza’s dubbed out, gritty saw-tooth rendition are also there for those who missed it first time around. (Amp - nick@thisisbreaks.com)

Freeflow45

Nuskool Detention / Spook Busted
Bombtraxx

BTX031 Freeflow45 - Nuskool Detention - Bombtraxx Records by Bombtraxx

Dom Sweeten, aka Freeflow45, consistently delivers the sort of crisp, bad-ass rollers that sit pretty between the breaks/techno divide. His latest stint on Georgia’s Bombtraxx imprint is a credible addition to the developing wobble-bass sound that's been making its way into breakers' productions of late. Nuskool Detention sports a murderous b-line, acid stabs and siren interludes, making for perfect twisted o’clock fodder. On the flip, Spook Busted does very much the same thing, with a scattering of feverish vocal snippets and a more upbeat bassline to give it some extra warmth. (Amp - nick@thisisbreaks.com)

Line Of Sight

[SCAR09] Line of Sight - Bubblegun (Original) by scarcityrecords

Bulgaria’s Line Of Sight joins the Scarcity team to bring us more from the psy-tinged front line. The original here is a pleasing bass burbler combining textured melodies atop distorted guitar rhythms and grumpy low end work. Remixes are provided by Spanish newcomer Deenk who throws down a more syncopated rendition without tampering with the overall template too much, whilst High Eight dithers more on the melodic side and Jurassik fumbles with his wobble board to offer up a crazy, stripped-back rave edit with some promising originality. N-Funk Part 4 Exclusive Previews by NAPT

NAPT, the perennial chart toppers and breakbeat virtuosos, return with the fourth and final instalment of their N-Funk series on Funkatech Records, which sees the London boys really refining that N-Funk sound. Up first is Narcotics, a funky as all hell track that's led by an elastic bassline and a synth line that reminds me of electro pioneers Dynamix II. Some wobble added to the bass before the second breakdown gives it a bit of a fidgety feel, and a great Christopher Walken sample that gives the tune its name rounds it out nicely. Fuck Critics pulls no punches in letting you know how the boys feel about those antagonistic towards their sound, but I promise that's not the reason I'm giving it a positive review - it's because Fuck Critics is full on peak time party breaks, of the type that NAPT does best. Big bass, lots of percussion, slick edits and plenty of builds are sure to set the crowd off - if this tune doesn't get you hyped you just might be dead. If you know NAPT and their signature sound then you know what to expect and this time they've really outdone themselves. (Steve Clotho - clothobreaks@hotmail.com)

LuQas
Altered States
Dead Famous

LuQas - Altered States [DF32] by Dead Famous

Brighton's crown prince of acid breaks drops a thunderous psy-tech monster with the obligatory atmospheric movie sample. Strikes me that this one is crying out for a remix with a little more break in its beat, but Dead Famous have plumped for an almost identical reworking from Perpetual Present, instead. Both tracks are wicked, mind. (Jurassik - editor@thisisbreaks.com)

Eight:Ball

Preconception
Big Square

Eight:Ball / Kickflip / Metroboy - Preconception preview by Big Square Records

London based nuskool breaks label Big Square Records follow up on the wicked single The Trip from Lunar Shift with this next little pearler from newly formed duo Eight:Ball, made up of Seb Taylor (Digitalis) and vocalist Natasha Chamberlain. They've crafted an energetic dancefloor tune that drops deep and rock 'n' rolls around a funky bassline, tin drum syncopation and melodic blips and synths. It's got a mainroom sound, with Natasha's vocal keeping it upbeat and upfront without too much aggression. On the remix, the ever-lively Kickflip brings out the vocal more and digs deeper for extra grit. Both tunes are well worth packing for a party set or adding to the Friday night office playlist to get ready for a groovy weekend. (MM - missmax@supatronix.org)
